Depression, Anxiety, and Abnormal Behavior in Middle School Students

Abstract
Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the degree and relation of Depression, Anxiety, Abnormal behavior in middle school students. Subjects : The participants of the study were 489 students of 1st grade in middle school.

Method: Data were collected from Oct. 10, 2005 to Oct. 30, 2005 by self-report questionnaires for depression and anxiety, parents-administered questionnaires for abnormal behavior, The instrument used for this study was Kovacs¡¯ Children¡¯s depression Inventory, Spielberger¡¯s State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Yale Children¡¯s Inventory. The data were analyzed using SPSS of window version 12.0.

Results: The results of this study were as follows
1) The mean of depression was 12.81 The distribution according to the depression degree had shown that 62.17% of students were normal, 32.31% of students had mild depression, 5.32% moderate depression and 0.20% severe depression.
2) The mean of trait-anxiety was 30.76. The distribution according to the trait-anxiety degree had shown that 63.19% of students were normal, 30.88% of students had mild trait-anxiety, 5.73% moderate trait-anxiety and 0.20% severe trait-anxiety.
3) The mean of state-anxiety was 32.36. The distribution according to the state-anxiety degree had shown that 64.62% of students were normal, 27.20% of students had mild state-anxiety, 6.95% was moderate state-anxiety, 1.23% was severe state-anxiety.
4) Abnormal behavior were notified that negative affect 18.42%. habituation 18.16%, conduct-socialized 16.68%, attention and fine-motor 13.42% in order of male group, conduct-aggressive 16.51%, language and tine-motor 5.50%. impulsivity 4,59%, conduct-socialized 2.75% in order of female group.
5) There were no significant differences in depression according to gender and economic state of general characteristics.
6) There were only significant differences in state-anxiety according to economic status. The others were not significant differences.
7) There were significant differences in abnormal behavior according to sex and religion. But there were no significant differences in abnormal behavior according to economic status of general characteristics.
8) Depression had a significant correlation with trait-anxiety(r=.618, p<.0001). Correlation between depression and state-anxiety was relatively positive(r=.529, p<.0001). Trait-anxiety had a significant correlation with the state-anxiety (r=.468, p<.0001). Abnormal behavior had a positive correlation significantly with depression (r=.529, p<.0001), trait anxiety (r=.468, p<.0001), and state anxiety(r=.305, p<.0001)

Conclusion: It seems that depression and anxiety level were within normal range compare to other studies. But Abnormal behavior were somewhat lower level due to parents-administered questionnaires. From the findings of the study, abnormal behavior had significant correlation with depression and anxiety. This study suggests that further studies are necessary to measure middle students affection and behaviors for reciprocal relationship.
